3 Keys to Successful Onboarding

The onboarding process is a critical aspect of any business. The person that you hired is making an important first impression of the company during this time. They are privately thinking about things such as:

  • Did I make the right move in coming here?

  • Is this a well-run organization?

  • Do I like the people that I am working with?

  • Do I see myself being here for a while?

It also can be a stressful and overwhelming time for the employee. They are having to learn how a new organization works, the specifics of their job, and are meeting new people.

Here are three keys to the onboarding process regardless of the field and job.

1. Emphasize the purpose - During the onboarding process go over the company purpose or mission statement, the vision, and core values. Talk about how these guide the company and drive what we are doing. Also, discuss the role that each person plays in bringing these to life. The key is to connect each person's role to the company's purpose.

2. Be clear on the expectations - Articulate how things are done and the standards that we hold ourselves to. This may relate to the quality of the work, how we deal with customers, interact with colleagues, timeliness, and more.

3. Facilitate relationships - Be proactive in helping the new hire develop relationships with a variety of people. This may be with people they will work directly with, direct supervisors, upper management, individuals in other departments, HR, etc. By doing this you make them feel comfortable and develop a sense of belonging. It will also help in collaborations and problem-solving down the road for this person.

By taking these steps you are setting your new hire and the organization up for success. They are more likely to excel in their role and stay with the organization.
