Living an Intentional Life

Intentional living is about living with purpose. It is deciding how you want to live your life rather than leaving it up to chance. A quote by Susan Young that sums this up beautifully is, "You are the author of your own life story."

A couple of reasons why it is so important:

  • Our mind tends to focus on the negative. A study by the National Science Foundation found that 80% of our thoughts are negative. To combat this we need to be intentional about how we live our life and our mindset.

  • When we live intentionally we can make a greater impact by using our skills and passions to serve others.

How do you live an intentional life?

You first need to understand what is important to you and what you want to bring into your life. This takes some reflection and getting to know yourself.

3 important areas to consider with intentional living:

  1. Be intentional with how you spend your time. Are you spending time on things that you enjoy? Are you spending time on what will make you successful with your work? Is it leading you toward your purpose? Utilizing scheduling is key to bringing this to life.

  2. Be intentional about who you are spending your time with. Jim Rohn said, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." Are these people lifting you up or bringing you down? The people whom you spend time with will affect your happiness, well-being, and career.

  3. Be intentional about the information you are consuming. What are you feeding your mind? Is it uplifting and moving you toward your vision or is it more negative? Think about what you are watching on TV, seeing on social media, reading, etc.

To start living intentionally start by reflecting and gaining clarity on what the life you want to create looks like. Then go through each of the three areas above and see what changes need to be made to help you realize that. Pick one area and action item to focus on first.
